Dear Michel,
Thank you for contacting me about your support for Alzheimer's disease research. I share your support for increased federal resources to fight this devastating disease.
As a member of the Alzheimer's Task Force, I am leading the fight in the U.S. Senate to increase Alzheimer's research that leads to new treatments and cures that can improve and even save the lives of those with Alzheimer's. I am pleased to let you know this year's budget includes $34.1 billion for the National Institutes of Health, a $2 billion increase from last fiscal year. This includes a $400 million increase for Alzheimer's research, $120 million increase for Precision Medicine, and a $110 million increase for the BRAIN initiative.
I am also pleased to announce that for the first time Medicare will pay for new individual care plans to support Alzheimer's patients and their families. Last year, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid finalized its decision to effectively implement my Health Outcomes, Planning and Education (HOPE) for Alzheimer's Act, which calls for new care plans to be developed for patients and their families. This will make a major difference in the lives of Alzheimer's patients and their loved ones who help care for them every day.
You can count on my continued support for research into a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Thank you for sharing your views with me. Please do not hesitate to do so again, whenever I can be of assistance to you.
Sincerely,
Debbie Stabenow
United States Senator
